HULLABALOO CHAPTER 14

Summary (chapter 14)

Mr Chawla realized that situations were getting worst in the orchard and that is why Mr Chawla requested his son to move to a proper heritage so at least everyone would be safe. The monsoons were also going to arrive, he needed a proper shelter. Getting upset with Sampath’s blank face Mr Chawla ordered him to read the vedas (religious books) in order to communicate deeply with the devotees and not say silly things.

Sampath argued with his father telling him that he was not going to leave the tree. He had deep connections with the tree now, his father never understood him. Sampath wanted to be alone and that is why he ran away but his family followed him again. When it was time for dinner, he told his mother that he was being forced to leave the tree and live in a hermitage. Even Kulfi was against it and jokingly gave the idea of poisoning them.

The drunken monkeys were back, this time they drank the illicit liquor that an old women sells in bazar. As they came back to the orchard they created more chaos then they ever did. They destroyed kulfi’s kitchen and its items. She ran after them with a broom in her hand trying to shoo them away. They even destroyed the Sampath’s umbrella. Luckily no one was hurt. The monkeys made their way to the university research forest. They destroyed everything on their way.

The next day Mr Chawla went to the town. Things were not going as he planed it would. He was worried about the diseases these animals carried. The old District Collector had left and the new one had not arrived yet. That was the problem in a small place like Shakot, where no one bothers to give any importance to it. Mr Chawla had decided he is going to meet the other officials in order to maintain peace and happiness in Shahkot.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 13

Summary (chapter 13)

Chapter 13 starts after 1 month after of the arrival of the monkeys. A very unfortunate event had taken place, the monkeys had found 5 bottles of rum. The monkeys fond it in a bag of a man who was on his way to a wedding and stopped by to take baba’s blessings.

They drank it all up and caused chaos in the orchard. Sampath along with several other devotees requested them to be quiet but they would not listen. Mr Chawla discovered the rum bottles and figured out what was happening to the monkeys.

The monkeys loved the taste of the rum and so they became more and more restless trying to look for more beer and rum that would satisfy their taste buds.

The monkeys would now go around cashing bags and upsetting the people again. They would even irritate the devotees in the orchard. Miss Joytsana and few others realized how the situation was getting out of control.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 12

Summary (chapter 12)

In chapter 12 Pinky sees the monkeys and again, she starts to think that these monkeys might have followed her. Aammji knew they were trouble and Mr Chawla also seem to agree with her.

The monkeys figured out that Sampath was not going to cause any harm to them, the monkeys were also impressed by the amount of food that was offered to Sampath. As soon as the offering was made the food was stolen away by the monkeys, which ruined  Mr Chawla’s idea of reselling the offerings.

All the female devotees had some story to tell, they all thought that Sampath charmed the monkeys. The spy tried to explain the devotees how these monkeys knew the way to interact with humans but no one was going to listen to him.

Whenever Pinky saw the monkeys it reminded her of the Hungry Hop Boy. Pinky had suddenly developed some feelings for her brother she realised how her brother wanted to run away from the painful world. Now she wanted to do the same. She regretted shouting at him when he use to sit idle on the rooftop in Shahkot.

She spend hours under Sampath’s tree imagining random possibilities. Suddenly she was angry with the hungry hop boy thinking that he was the one causing her all the trouble and worry. She seeked her brother’s help. Sampath compared her to a firecracker, and with the help of his wise words, she decide to “explode.”

The next day Pinky got dressed and made her way to the bus stop. The spy followed her just this once to make sure that there was nothing going on with Pinky. Pinky took off her hair pin and attacked the spy, he needed to rush for a tetanus shot to Doctor Banerjee.

In the market she walked up to the hungry hop boy. At first she had a felling as if she wanted to kiss him but instead she bit his ear so hard that a piece of it fell off. Everyone rushed to see what was happening.

The police questioned pinky, but she was not scared. After a few minutes of conversation another police man came in and whispered something secretly. When the police man realised that she was the sister of the baba (holy man). Without further questions Pinky was dropped safely home. She was satisfied now that she had bit Hungry Hop.

The policeman also went along to take Sampath’s blessing, thing did not go the way Mr Chawla expected, Sampath completey ignore the policeman as well as his questions. Sampath always had bad time with policemen. Mr Chawla wondered why Sampath did take important people seriously.

When the policeman asked if he could have a picture with this great baba then Mr Chawla thought why he never came up with this marketing idea. Mr Chawla brought along a photographer and gave him the exact instructions on how the picture should look like.

As soon as Sampath saw the photographer, Sampath reminded the photographer of the love letter he use to send. The photographer was shocked and it took him few minutes to recover. He also took the pictures for free. After the photo secession the pictures were published everywhere, even in the Times of India.

Later that day there was an annual meeting of the Atheist Society. The spy was outraged about the Chawla case. He was furious as he spoke about the baba, he consumed up so much time that it was everyone’s dinner time but the spy would not stop his complains. The audience was getting upset and forced him to end his speech.  Once again the spy was filled with the determination to expose Sampath as a fraud.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 11

Summary (chapter 11)

In chapter 11 we get to explore the Kulfi’s cooking pots. Kulfi is in the forest looking for and setting a trap for the strangest birds that she can find. When she cooks it would make Sampath happy and she herself wanted to explore more of the forest creatures and try them one by one.

She was warned about the dangers in woods by goat herder. But she did not care she wanted explore those plants, roots and even flowers. She would try her best to avoid any visitors that had come to the orchard because she was not interested in a chat she just wanted to cook for her son and satisfy herself.

Sampath would wait for his meals. Sometimes her creations were impressive but at times they were not. Mr. Chawla who would watched this, was worried that Sampath might die because of the kind of food given to him. Kulfi assured that the meal was safe by feeding a little part of it to the chickens. Mr. Chawla was really did not understand her ways. Mr Chawla was ready to take Kulfi to the mental asylum but he could not, after all they were the most respectable people in the town. What might the devotees think?

The devotees watched as Sampath ate his delicious smelling meal. They would try to take a peak of what Kulfi was cooking but there was not point of that she would aggressively shoo them away.

The spy had finally given up his research, he was sure that there was something in Kulfi’s cooking pots. Due to these food issues, Mr Chawla had set up certain time at which devotes could come meet him.

These allocated times made Sampath feel like an important person. At the end of the chapter Desai leaves us with a cliff hanger telling us that everything was just fine before the monkeys arrived.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 10

Summary (chapter 10)

The Chawla family had settled in the orchard everything was supplied to them after all they are the family of the India’s great holy man. From lights, electricity, water, matches, soap, candles directly delivered to their door step.

Mr. Chawla had more in mind he wanted to extend his house, making a new kitchen or even open a bank account in the name of special fund to build temple. This will make endless amounts of money as people were so attacked to Sampath’s so called power.

Every one earned money even the rickshaw men had started to charge people more. Buses had to make more often trips to the orchard then it ever did.

As we know from the previous chapters that Sampath was provided with all sorts of comfort in the tree and now it was the family’s turn. Ammaji opened her tea stall; she enjoyed her snack and tea as she chatted the whole day. Mr Chawla was a guard to all those offerings that had been given to Sampath. By the end of the day he would collect them and sell them again the next day.

There was one man among the devotees who was a spy from the Atheist Society  and was also the member of Branch to Uncover Fraudulent Holy Men. The spy suspected that Sampath was not a real holy man. The spy made notes, asked Sampath questions and even kept his eye on anything he found unusual. He had a miserable life, hopeless family and a job as a teacher that he hated. He wanted to find the truth.

With all the questions the spy asked made Sampath really upset. Sampath showed everyone as if he was in deep thoughts so that he gets to ignore any further questions form the spy. Ammaji who was chatting with the devotees explained them how upset the family was with Sampath and how they would beg him to study, maybe just a little to get a passing grade. Even Miss Jyotsana entered the conversation and told them her experience with Sampath.

The pleasant surrounding and the beauty of nature made everyone, at that moment miss Jyotsana begin to sing. Sampath’s love for Jyotsana grew eve more, he had always admired her and sweet voice just made her even more perfect.

The spy was completely shocked. He  wondered how Sampath can even fool people so easily. The spy did not want to miss any detail; he even used his sense of smell to get any further clue about Sampath. The smell of cardamom and cloves filled the air. Someone was cooking. The spy thought that Sampath might be on drugs…

Problem

Sampath’s advice

Can anybody comprehend all there is to know about God?
Once you have broken a bottle you can no longer distinguish the air inside from the air outside.
Can you talk about the problem of religious unrest in our country?
North, south, east and west, everyone eats lentils in some form or another and everybody receives their nutritional benefits.
I try to interest my children in spiritual matters, but they turn a deaf ear.
There is no sign of the fruit when you buy the shoot.  A watermelon does not exist before the watermelon season.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 9

Summary (chapter 9)

Chapter 9 focuses more on Pinky’s character. As we know from the previous chapter that Mr Chwala is busy planning for Sampath. Mr Chawala who ordered Pinky to take the typing course completely forgot about it and now called it a ‘silly class,' showing he does not want to be bothered.

In this chapter the writer tells us how obsessed she is with looks, she would spend hours and days just thinking what she is going to wear on her next trip to the bazaar unfortunately none of her family members are capable to help her. The problem with pinky is that whenever she goes to the bazaar and when she returns home she announces to the family that she was being followed, worried Mr Chawla orders her to wear simple cotton dresses the next time she goes to the bazaar.

Ammaji needed some dentures so Ammaji and Pinky both of them went to the bazaar. Pinky tried to hide from the people in bazar by taking hidden routes because she was wearing cotton cloths, that might ruin her reputation in the market.

Ammaji decided to take Pinky to watch a movie to lighten her mood. After they finished watching the movie they went to the hungry hop ice-cream boy.  At that time pinky saw the Cinema Monkey. The Monkey was not after Ammaji who had the ice-cream come but instead after Pinky.

Ammaji dropped her cone but she did not actually intend to, unfortunately  the monkey saw that and thought that the cone was actually peanut roll. The money ran towards Ammaji. The newly bought dentures were also stuck in the ice-cream cone. Ammaji asked the hungry hop boy to help her, he was not new to this situation, to help her he ran after the monkey. When the monkey realised it was not actually peanut roll, he dropped it and the hop boy brought back Ammaji’s dentures.

This incident was embracing for Pinky. Hungry hop boy who was calm and handled the situation very well saved Pinky from too much humiliation. She felt some different feelings for him.

Pinky was very sad, those tear that she had controlled all busted out as soon as she reached home.  Ammaji and her silly denture trick also were not enough to cheer her up.

Chapter 9 can be divided like this:

1.Pinky agonises over what outfit to wear for her weekly trip to the bazaar (p.81)

2.Pinky complains to Mr Chawla that men keep following her around town (p.82)

3.Mr Chawla tells her to dress more plainly and to take Ammaji to buy new dentures (p.82-83)

4.Pinky sulks on the bus into town but Ammaji is happy and excited to be out (p.83-84)

5.Pinky and Ammaji buy dentures and visit the cinema to see an old romance movie (p.84-85)

7.Hungry Hop boy scares the monkey away and retrieves the dentures (p.86-87)

8.Hungry Hop boy returns the dentures and flirts with Pinky, who falls in love with him (p.87-88)

9.Pinky & Ammaji return to the orchard. Pinky sulks and Ammaji tries to cheer her up (p.88-89)

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 8

Summary (chapter 8)

In chapter 8 Mr Chawla relises something, that Sampath’s unfathomable wisdom can be use to generate some money into the house. Mr Chawla who actually knows that Sampath is not super intelligent and magical person but just a lazy boy. Mr Chawla was busy planning things he can do with the help of Sampath, he did reveal out anything and is waiting for the right time to seize the opportunity.

Since Sampath’s popularity grew and people started camping in the orchard. It was time to make Sampath look more like a professional at what he does, as more and more devotees gather. So the family decided to provided him with a cot, an umbrella to protect him from sun and rain and a quilt, woolen hat kitted by Ammaji. That was not the end, the family also took special care about their hygiene after all they had some respect for their level cleanliness in the society. With the help of ropes and buckets, this pulley system was designed by Mr Chalwla. The family was successfully able to provide Sampath with a bath.

They also had to take care of Sampath’s health so they attached another carte to the pulley system and send it to Samapth. It was so amazing see the dramatic change, few days back he was nobody, no one cared for him and now he was like a king giving orders to his family. Sitting high up in the tree, he was happy and satisfied.

The first once to come to visit Samapath was Mr Gupta and Ms Joytsana. They were the once who criticised Samapth for his bad behaviour at the marriage and here they were taking his advice. Mr Gupta likes teasing Miss Jyotsana. Samapath reminds Jyotsana that she had to repay 152 rupees. This shocked everyone especially Ms Joytsana who never wanted to reveal this secret. Again this was not any sort of wisdom at all, credit it all to post office were Sampath secretly sneaked into Miss Jyotsana's bag.

It seemed as if the respect for him grew even more, more people started to ask him all sorts of questions. All Sampath’s answers were somewhat related to food, animals and nature. For people it did not matter if the answer make sense or not and most of the time it was the people who asked the questions the once to answer it themselves.

Kulfi’s inspiration grew from the things that Samapath spoke, and she started to cook for Sampath, her passion for cooking and food was so huge that ingredients in a regular kitchen and ingredients on the bazaar shelves could not satisfy her. She was usually upset by the fact that her neighbors always interrupted her cooking by advising her how to cook. She hated that. She gives Sampath what she cooked but was still not satisfied with the outcome. Then she would only cook again when she would be inspired.

Even Kulfi like Sampath achieved a level of peace and space in the orchard. Kulfi knew her son very well. She knew everything that he was going trough. Her son gave her a sense of peace, she loved him and she cooked for him and only him. Pinky, on the other hand had no deep connections with her mother, but the father and daughter relationship seem to go quite well.

Chapter 8 can be divided like this:

1.Mr Chawla realises how Sampath being in the tree can benefit the family (p.68)

2.The Chawla family make changes to Sampath’s living arrangement (p.69-70)

3.The Chawlas make arrangements for Sampath’s washing, meals and toilet. (p.71-72)

4.Sampath starts giving advice to the people visiting his tree (p.73-76)

5.Desai shows Kulfi’s thoughts and feelings about cooking for Sampath (p.76-79)

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 7

Summary (chapter 7)

When the family came back they realised that Sampath was missing from the house. They went to the local police station to report for missing Sampath but lazy Shahkotians were unanle to find Sampath.

At last the watchman of University Research Forest saw a man on top of a near by tree that’s how the news spread. Mr. Chawla could predict who that might be it might be, none other than his own son Sampath.
Sampath was not very pleased to find them there he wanted them to shoo away and ask them why they were here but he could not. After all, he did not want to hurt their feelings.

Mr Chawla and Pinky who were more worried about their reputation in town tried to force Sampath down the tree but Ammaji on the other hand was worried about Sampath's health and pleaded him to come down. Surprisingly Kulfi his mother, who he loved most was quiet.

Kulfi remembers her dark past and that feeling of being enclosed by walls. So Kulfi decides to let Sampath stay where he was because she knew exactly what he was feeling and knew that he also wanted his own freedom.

The family started to look for solutions the family went to Dr Banerjee for help, Tibetan doctor, homeopathic medicines and finally the holy man. The solution the man gave was most trusted by the family. A marriage.

Even Kulfi was married  to Mr Chawla for the same reason. Kulfi always acted weird like sleep walking and also her strange obsessions with food seem to grow since her late teens. Kulfi's family feared that the rumor of her wired attitude will spread around the town. So before it does they got her married to Mr Chawla.

The writer describes that a typical Indian women should be perfect from head to toe but if she is not then dowry need to be given to the man's family. Kulfi's family had given dowry to Mr Chawla's family which made Ammaji greedy. Mr Chawla knew that this family was slightly insane but telling this to Ammaji was of no use.

The family had found a girl for Sampath not as perfect as every one wanted but they were satisfied to have at least found a girl. Sampath would not come down so the girl had to climb up to meet her future husband. Unfortunately she fell and sneezed, these two incidences combined were enough to make people talk about this relationship and call it 'not auspicious.' This solution did not really work out.

After all that chaos Sampath started to think again all about the school and post office. In the crowd below him he saw Mr Singh, Mr Chopra and Ratan Sinha he remembered what he had read from the letters and attacked them with a few embarrassing questions. All of them were shocked to hear what Sampath told them.

People thought he was some sort of magical spirit who knew what was going on in their lives. Smapath was now on newspapers all around Shahkot. Sampath was popular. This certainly shows the attitude of the Shahkotian and how they believe more in orthodox then in real life facts.

Chapter 7 is long and can be divided into 5 sections, like this:

1. The Chawlas look for help getting Sampath down out of the tree.  They go to the police, a doctor, some alternative healers and, finally, a holy man. (pages 52-57)

2. The author describes the process of making a traditional arranged marriage in India and describes favoured characteristics in a wife among familes. (pages 57-59)

3. The Chawlas attempt to get Sampath out of the tree by forcing him to meet an arranged wife, who they send up into the tree after him. (pages 59-62)

4. Mr Chawla remembers the conditions of his own arranged marriage to Kulfi (pages 62-65)

5. Sampath gets the attention of some nearby locals and devotees (pages 65-67).

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 6

Summary (chapter 6)

Sampath’s family was out again for a wedding, since it was a wedding season in India, but of course they had left Sampath at home (this time they are not taking any risk). I think not only because of the awkward pant removing scene in Mr. DPS’s daughter’s wedding but also as a matter of self respect in the society for Mr.Chawla

Sampath knew exactly what he wanted to do, I think this was the first time he ever had an aim, which was to escape life in Shakot. Desai compares Sampath to a snake, leaving his old dead skin and growing a new one. For Sampath this means leaving his miserable life and moving on. Even he did not know where he wanted to go.

His aim was clear (to leave noisy Shahkot) but his path was unclear. He picked a random bus, where he met all sorts of people, mainly those who supply milk.

Sampath jumped off the bus. He ran towards the guava orchard like a wild beast. Now Sampath felt like he belongs here. Everything was so refreshing, unique, peaceful, warm, cool, and delicate and all sorts of insects, parrots, to accompany him.

He felt like a king no one to order him, he was on top of the orchard, and he can do what ever he likes whenever he wants because it was just him and the quite orchard. Until...

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 5

Summary (chapter 5)

Chapter 5 starts with the cool winter In Shahkot . It is the day of Mr. DPS's daughter's marriage. The whole staff is busy to complete the preparation of marriage. Sampath also got the work to fill glasses with sherbet, everyone agreed that this was the only job that he can do.

As boredom developed in his mind he decided to see DPS’s house. He saw all the rooms but didn't find anything interesting until he came to the end of corridor where there was a room which was filled with beautiful clothes, jewelry, colorful saris everywhere. Here he got the chance to choose clothes, wear jewelry and do whatever that interests him. He wore sari and played with the  jewelry. He kept the room dark and closed all the doors and windows, this darkness remided him of his house where everyone is sleeping and he is the only one awake. He remembered his struggles at school as he was not a very bright student.

He comes out of his past memories and he put on a silver shoe and start singing and dancing outside the room, he felt like a warrior. Singing and dancing truly seems to be Sampath’s hobby. He likes to sing when he is happy and tries to forget all his worries. Sampath had drunk all of the sherbet he had filled up and was drunk. His unconsciousness made him removes his underwear in public. Mr. DPS shouted at him to stop and other people came to catch him but he went to the highest tier of fountain and removed his underpants. He was the entertainer for the evening, but it was not very appropriate for the occasion.

When he came out of this wonderful feeling of happiness, joy and excitement he realised that he was fired from the job in post office. Mr. Gupta who was ashamed of his son and not trying to comfort Sampath but instead attacked him like a prowling cat forcing him to look for another job immediately. Mr. Gupta and Jyotsana came to add more misery for poor Sampath.

Sampath goes to the rooftop and sits down and looks up to the sky and again his thoughts and memories blossomed. kulfi went to the rooftop where Sampath is sitting. She feels sorry for him as usual and gave him a guava which is the season fruit. She show her affection  to him. He was still thinking about the post office, when he saw guava in his hands it was cool and calm just opposite of Shahkotians and his family. As he tried to release his anger, crushed the guava and released it coolness. A strange force overtook him and he realised that he wanted freedom.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 4

Summary (chapter 4)

In chapter 4 Sampath is going to work at the Post Office. Desai describes Shahkot as being dry, hot and dusty. As Sampath cycles through the road his skin colour merges with the background as the dust accumulates on his skin. Sampath makes his way to the post office along with Pinky in the back seat. Streets of Shakot full of animals like pigs, cows, buffaloes, priest, clerk, tutors and many more.

Sampath rides the bicycle in a very clumsy way which made people on the street complain and Pinky thinks that her brother is crazy so she gets off the bicycle and decided to go on the bus. Pinky knows how to handle herself, and knows what to do when people misbehave with her. Pinky is alert but on the other hand Sampath is slow and lazy. On the way to his office the writer shows once again that he is attracted to nature by talking to a cow.

The writer introduces two new characters Miss Jyotsana and Mr Gupta. Miss Joytsana likes to talk to Sampath but Mr. Gupata always takes this opportunity reply to Miss Jyotsana himself. Mr. DPS who is the boss of the office has a daughter who is going to get married. So Mr. DPS ordered Sampath some task but again his thoughts just wondered all around when DPS started given the instructions.
In the post office he like to read all the letters and post cards which had to be sorted out but instead he likes to read and imagine the situations for hours and hours. This would result in incomplete work along with a warning to come early the next day to complete the work. But nobody knows that he did not sleep all night.

Opinion

Talking to cow may seems silly but Sampath thinks that only nature and animals can understand him. Also on the street he tried to absorb all the coolness from the surrounding, possibly that is because he likes a cool atmosphere similar to chapter 2 where he picked up a leaf to get all of its coolness to feel relaxed.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 3

Summary (chapter 3)

In chapter 3 the writer describes the morning scene of Sampath's house. Mr Chawla is the head clerk of reserve bank of Shahkot he likes to stay  up-to-date with the news, punctual about time, and health conscious. Desai show us that Mr. Chawla is boastful. He thinks that he can rule and command his family members as they are unable to do anything without him but as usual every one simply ignores him(refer back to chapter 1). Mr Chawla reads the newspaper and again nobody is interested especially Kulfi who is in her own world of food.

Desi adds new character 'The Cinema Monkey'' who have created lots of trouble for the locals. This detail was given by Pinky as she gets upset with the boring news that her father reads. We get to know a little about Pinky in this chapter, she maybe interested in films and is obsessed with her looks as she paints her nails. Pinky also criticizing (makes fun of) Sampath indirectly, indicting that he is useless.

Mr Chawla wants his son to be active and do something that will make him proud, but Sampath is like is mother, avoiding everything his father tells him. The reason for ignoring his father's lecture was also that he did not have a goodnight sleep. Ammaji who knew this was therefore supporting her grandson and at the same time giving some hope to Mr Chawla, but telling him about 'stars' that will effect Samapth's fate is of no use because Mr Chwala is a practical man.

Kulfi who overheard the conversation between Mr Chawla and his son was showing her sympathy towards him as his father compares him to a potato. Potato reminds Kulfi of food again.

Opinion

I think that this family cant really get together. Mr Chwala does not try to understand his son or try to ask him what he wants. Sampath is just being forced to do what his father tells him to do. They seem to have a very dull conversation. Sampath is not open to his father maybe because he is scared of him or maybe it is Indian culture.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 2

Summary (chapter 2)

The story starts again after 20 years. Desai shows that nothing really has changed in these 20 years. The same clutter of rooftops, washing-lines, but now there were television aerials but again there is power cut in Shahkot in chapter 2.

Desai introduces new character Pinky, Sampath's younger sister. Chapter 2 tells us about the events which occur that night at Sampath's house. The writer indicated many different problems that Sampath faces at night. All of Sampath's family members were snoring in deep sleep which kept Sampath awake.

Chapter 2 gives us some clue about Sampath, he seems like a calm person as he does not like noisy atmosphere. The description of Sampath's appearance given by Desai adds little comedy. He has 'spider like legs and arms and worried looking face,' this phrase certainly shows that Sampath does not have a large appetite like Kulfi.

Sampath went to the rooftop to calm himself and escape the terrible noises. He walked back and forth, absorb the coolness of the leaf, tasted pickles and finally he started singing and when he sang he was happier.

Before Sampath can even fall asleep the water supply was turned on and again the loud noises of buckets being filled with water, all over Shahkokt. Priests singing their songs and people were back to their normal day routine, fully energised but except for Sampath.

Opinion

It feels like Sampath is really lonely and no one really cares about what is going on in Sampath's life. In chapter 2 Sampath seems quite upset , he is looking for ways that will (like singing) to make himself happy.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 1

Summary (chapter 1)

The setting of the story is Shahkot, a small town in India. The writer creates the image of Shahkot as being dull and untidy. The sky is filled with 'dust' caused by extreme droughts and leading to famine. This high tension levels right in the beginning  can cause the audience to be hooked right away.

The main characters include: Kulfi, Mr Chawla and Ammaji (Mr. Chawla's mother) who seemed to really worried. Except for Kulfi, Mr. Chawla's wife who was pregnant and did not seem to care about anything because only food was on her mind, that is what creates all the complication in the story. All the food in town was gone but kulfi just want to eat more and more. Kulfi would do anything to get what she wanted to eat.

People of Shahkot were trying to find solution for this disaster. For example a 'frog wedding' was proposed. This shows the belief of Indian people and how Kiran Desai, the Indian aurthor imagines it to be. Clearly we say that culture is one of the themes of this story. Apart from just surprising the audience with unique Indian culture, Kiran Desai also includes some comedy like small arguments between Ammaji and Mr. Chawla as both of them have very opposite view. Mr. Chawla is more practical on the other hand Ammaji is more conservative. Like Ammaji would advise Kulfi to go temple where as Mr. Chawala recommended  exercise.

The character of Kulfi seems very unique she is creative and does what she thinks is right, making her an independent women. In chapter 1 the writer has included some feminist and masculine perspectives like Ammaji wants a baby boy this shows a bit more about the Indian beliefs. Where as Kulfi portrays a feminists role who ignores most of the things Ammaji and Mr. Chawla tells her to do (and they cant do anythig about it). Kulfi gets different feelings inside her sometimes she is quiet and sometimes she wants to scream.

When Sampath was born people in Shahkot believed that he was a lucky boy because it rained at the same time he was born and even food packages were dropped by the Swedish planes. People of Shahkot are happy once again.

Opinion
I think that chapter one is like a story, right in the start they have mentioned the conflict and tension is it's peek and tension stays up as there is no food but Kulfi's demand keeps on increasing. tension goes down as it rains, people get food and the protagonist Sampth is born. I like the way Desai hooks the audience right in the start and also the use of vivid vocabulary, making us feel the character.
