Summary (chapter 3)
In chapter 3 the writer describes the morning scene of Sampath's house. Mr Chawla is the head clerk of reserve bank of Shahkot he likes to stay up-to-date with the news, punctual about time, and health conscious. Desai show us that Mr. Chawla is boastful. He thinks that he can rule and command his family members as they are unable to do anything without him but as usual every one simply ignores him(refer back to chapter 1). Mr Chawla reads the newspaper and again nobody is interested especially Kulfi who is in her own world of food.
Desi adds new character 'The Cinema Monkey'' who have created lots of trouble for the locals. This detail was given by Pinky as she gets upset with the boring news that her father reads. We get to know a little about Pinky in this chapter, she maybe interested in films and is obsessed with her looks as she paints her nails. Pinky also criticizing (makes fun of) Sampath indirectly, indicting that he is useless.
Mr Chawla wants his son to be active and do something that will make him proud, but Sampath is like is mother, avoiding everything his father tells him. The reason for ignoring his father's lecture was also that he did not have a goodnight sleep. Ammaji who knew this was therefore supporting her grandson and at the same time giving some hope to Mr Chawla, but telling him about 'stars' that will effect Samapth's fate is of no use because Mr Chwala is a practical man.
Kulfi who overheard the conversation between Mr Chawla and his son was showing her sympathy towards him as his father compares him to a potato. Potato reminds Kulfi of food again.
Opinion
I think that this family cant really get together. Mr Chwala does not try to understand his son or try to ask him what he wants. Sampath is just being forced to do what his father tells him to do. They seem to have a very dull conversation. Sampath is not open to his father maybe because he is scared of him or maybe it is Indian culture.
