HULLABALOO CHAPTER 6

Summary (chapter 6)

Sampath’s family was out again for a wedding, since it was a wedding season in India, but of course they had left Sampath at home (this time they are not taking any risk). I think not only because of the awkward pant removing scene in Mr. DPS’s daughter’s wedding but also as a matter of self respect in the society for Mr.Chawla

Sampath knew exactly what he wanted to do, I think this was the first time he ever had an aim, which was to escape life in Shakot. Desai compares Sampath to a snake, leaving his old dead skin and growing a new one. For Sampath this means leaving his miserable life and moving on. Even he did not know where he wanted to go.

His aim was clear (to leave noisy Shahkot) but his path was unclear. He picked a random bus, where he met all sorts of people, mainly those who supply milk.

Sampath jumped off the bus. He ran towards the guava orchard like a wild beast. Now Sampath felt like he belongs here. Everything was so refreshing, unique, peaceful, warm, cool, and delicate and all sorts of insects, parrots, to accompany him.

He felt like a king no one to order him, he was on top of the orchard, and he can do what ever he likes whenever he wants because it was just him and the quite orchard. Until...

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 5

Summary (chapter 5)

Chapter 5 starts with the cool winter In Shahkot . It is the day of Mr. DPS's daughter's marriage. The whole staff is busy to complete the preparation of marriage. Sampath also got the work to fill glasses with sherbet, everyone agreed that this was the only job that he can do.

As boredom developed in his mind he decided to see DPS’s house. He saw all the rooms but didn't find anything interesting until he came to the end of corridor where there was a room which was filled with beautiful clothes, jewelry, colorful saris everywhere. Here he got the chance to choose clothes, wear jewelry and do whatever that interests him. He wore sari and played with the  jewelry. He kept the room dark and closed all the doors and windows, this darkness remided him of his house where everyone is sleeping and he is the only one awake. He remembered his struggles at school as he was not a very bright student.

He comes out of his past memories and he put on a silver shoe and start singing and dancing outside the room, he felt like a warrior. Singing and dancing truly seems to be Sampath’s hobby. He likes to sing when he is happy and tries to forget all his worries. Sampath had drunk all of the sherbet he had filled up and was drunk. His unconsciousness made him removes his underwear in public. Mr. DPS shouted at him to stop and other people came to catch him but he went to the highest tier of fountain and removed his underpants. He was the entertainer for the evening, but it was not very appropriate for the occasion.

When he came out of this wonderful feeling of happiness, joy and excitement he realised that he was fired from the job in post office. Mr. Gupta who was ashamed of his son and not trying to comfort Sampath but instead attacked him like a prowling cat forcing him to look for another job immediately. Mr. Gupta and Jyotsana came to add more misery for poor Sampath.

Sampath goes to the rooftop and sits down and looks up to the sky and again his thoughts and memories blossomed. kulfi went to the rooftop where Sampath is sitting. She feels sorry for him as usual and gave him a guava which is the season fruit. She show her affection  to him. He was still thinking about the post office, when he saw guava in his hands it was cool and calm just opposite of Shahkotians and his family. As he tried to release his anger, crushed the guava and released it coolness. A strange force overtook him and he realised that he wanted freedom.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 4

Summary (chapter 4)

In chapter 4 Sampath is going to work at the Post Office. Desai describes Shahkot as being dry, hot and dusty. As Sampath cycles through the road his skin colour merges with the background as the dust accumulates on his skin. Sampath makes his way to the post office along with Pinky in the back seat. Streets of Shakot full of animals like pigs, cows, buffaloes, priest, clerk, tutors and many more.

Sampath rides the bicycle in a very clumsy way which made people on the street complain and Pinky thinks that her brother is crazy so she gets off the bicycle and decided to go on the bus. Pinky knows how to handle herself, and knows what to do when people misbehave with her. Pinky is alert but on the other hand Sampath is slow and lazy. On the way to his office the writer shows once again that he is attracted to nature by talking to a cow.

The writer introduces two new characters Miss Jyotsana and Mr Gupta. Miss Joytsana likes to talk to Sampath but Mr. Gupata always takes this opportunity reply to Miss Jyotsana himself. Mr. DPS who is the boss of the office has a daughter who is going to get married. So Mr. DPS ordered Sampath some task but again his thoughts just wondered all around when DPS started given the instructions.
In the post office he like to read all the letters and post cards which had to be sorted out but instead he likes to read and imagine the situations for hours and hours. This would result in incomplete work along with a warning to come early the next day to complete the work. But nobody knows that he did not sleep all night.

Opinion

Talking to cow may seems silly but Sampath thinks that only nature and animals can understand him. Also on the street he tried to absorb all the coolness from the surrounding, possibly that is because he likes a cool atmosphere similar to chapter 2 where he picked up a leaf to get all of its coolness to feel relaxed.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 3

Summary (chapter 3)

In chapter 3 the writer describes the morning scene of Sampath's house. Mr Chawla is the head clerk of reserve bank of Shahkot he likes to stay  up-to-date with the news, punctual about time, and health conscious. Desai show us that Mr. Chawla is boastful. He thinks that he can rule and command his family members as they are unable to do anything without him but as usual every one simply ignores him(refer back to chapter 1). Mr Chawla reads the newspaper and again nobody is interested especially Kulfi who is in her own world of food.

Desi adds new character 'The Cinema Monkey'' who have created lots of trouble for the locals. This detail was given by Pinky as she gets upset with the boring news that her father reads. We get to know a little about Pinky in this chapter, she maybe interested in films and is obsessed with her looks as she paints her nails. Pinky also criticizing (makes fun of) Sampath indirectly, indicting that he is useless.

Mr Chawla wants his son to be active and do something that will make him proud, but Sampath is like is mother, avoiding everything his father tells him. The reason for ignoring his father's lecture was also that he did not have a goodnight sleep. Ammaji who knew this was therefore supporting her grandson and at the same time giving some hope to Mr Chawla, but telling him about 'stars' that will effect Samapth's fate is of no use because Mr Chwala is a practical man.

Kulfi who overheard the conversation between Mr Chawla and his son was showing her sympathy towards him as his father compares him to a potato. Potato reminds Kulfi of food again.

Opinion

I think that this family cant really get together. Mr Chwala does not try to understand his son or try to ask him what he wants. Sampath is just being forced to do what his father tells him to do. They seem to have a very dull conversation. Sampath is not open to his father maybe because he is scared of him or maybe it is Indian culture.

HULLABALOO CHAPTER 2

Summary (chapter 2)

The story starts again after 20 years. Desai shows that nothing really has changed in these 20 years. The same clutter of rooftops, washing-lines, but now there were television aerials but again there is power cut in Shahkot in chapter 2.

Desai introduces new character Pinky, Sampath's younger sister. Chapter 2 tells us about the events which occur that night at Sampath's house. The writer indicated many different problems that Sampath faces at night. All of Sampath's family members were snoring in deep sleep which kept Sampath awake.

Chapter 2 gives us some clue about Sampath, he seems like a calm person as he does not like noisy atmosphere. The description of Sampath's appearance given by Desai adds little comedy. He has 'spider like legs and arms and worried looking face,' this phrase certainly shows that Sampath does not have a large appetite like Kulfi.

Sampath went to the rooftop to calm himself and escape the terrible noises. He walked back and forth, absorb the coolness of the leaf, tasted pickles and finally he started singing and when he sang he was happier.

Before Sampath can even fall asleep the water supply was turned on and again the loud noises of buckets being filled with water, all over Shahkokt. Priests singing their songs and people were back to their normal day routine, fully energised but except for Sampath.

Opinion

It feels like Sampath is really lonely and no one really cares about what is going on in Sampath's life. In chapter 2 Sampath seems quite upset , he is looking for ways that will (like singing) to make himself happy.
